Kate & JoJo Kozak

This is a special Mother’s Day Member Spotlight. For this one, we share the story of the Kozak mother-daughter duo.

You will never know the feeling until you are within the walls and really appreciate the uniqueness of CrossFit Morgantown. It’s full of good vibes and some of the most supportive and awesome people you will ever come to know.  It will be one of the best decisions you will ever make and it will change your life.”

How long have you been a member at CrossFit Morgantown?

Kate: I’ve been a member of CFM for 6 and a half years.  It was the one year anniversary of CrossFit Morgantown when I joined.

JoJo: I’ve been coming to CrossFit Morgantown since I was 3 years old and I’ve been doing CrossFit Kids on and off since I was 4. I’m 10 years old now.

Why did you join?

Kate: I felt my fitness was stagnant. I was doing different fitness classes but I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. I was about to turn 40 and I knew at this point in my life I needed something new, some coaching and guidance. When I saw a Facebook Ad for CrossFit Morgantown and the promotion they were doing for their One Year Anniversary, I thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new. After a few text messages back and forth, I was assured they were family friendly and there would be a safe place I could have JoJo close by when I worked out (she was 3 at the time). Also, at the time they offered a women’s only class and the proximity was 5 minutes from my house. I was sold! I took the intro classes and they were the hardest workouts I had ever done, but I survived and was instantly hooked on the feeling!

JoJo: Because my Mom joined and then my Dad and I thought it was cool.

What do you love most about CFM? / What keeps you coming back each month?

Kate: That’s easy! The community!  The fellowship among the members keeps me coming back.  Its truly an honor for me to be a part of this amazing group of humans and to call them friends…honestly I could say family. The fitness is just the cherry on top! I would be remiss if I didn’t’ show the love for Jeff. His daily motivation and hype drives me to be the best version of myself and I will be forever grateful for everything he’s done to encourage me along the way, being my coach in fitness and life.

JoJo: It’s a fun place to go to run around, learn new skills, challenge myself and get stronger.

4)  What is your current occupation? And/or what are some hobbies, clubs, groups, or activities you participate in?

Kate: I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist currently working in the Clinical Laboratory at WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial. I work exclusively in the Microbiology Lab on Nightshift. I’ve worked here since we moved to Morgantown from Loveland, Colorado in June 2011. My work schedule is 8 nights on and 6 off so, with that being said, my hobbies/activities include maintaining my Phoenix Elite status by going to CrossFit Morgantown 5 days a week, sleeping and thrifting workout gear online to fund my FLEO shorts and athletic wear obsession. On my days off I make up for lost family time and enjoy hiking and exploring our beautiful state of WV.

JoJo: I am a 4th grade student at Mountainview Elementary. I am a Junior Girl Scout and I do Modern Dance. I like gaming and drawing and painting art. Lately I’ve been training with my Dad a combination of Strongman and CrossFit.

5)  Who inspires you?

Kate: The tribe of badass women with a special shoutout to the masters women within this community. My peers especially inspire me to give it all I’ve got everyday. Fortunately, I learned early on in my CrossFit journey that I shouldn’t compare myself to others, we are all on our own personal path, and that my only competition is the person I was yesterday and I try to improve her a little every day. I can honestly say my past self inspires me the most.

JoJo: My Mom and Dad.

6)  How has improved fitness impacted your life?

Kate: Improved fitness has quite simply heightened my self-esteem. It motivates me to make smarter decisions to improve and manage every aspect of my life including self-care, family, nutrition and my profession, just to name a few, and to ultimately unlock my full potential.

JoJo: It makes me feel more confident and strong like I can stand up to bullies, not shy and embarrassed and weak.

7)  What’s one thing – either fitness related or not – you learned in the last month?

Kate: While in the midst of a pandemic I’ve come to learn quite a bit about public health. When the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were materializing, I was so absorbed in my fitness bubble, the notion of not being able to workout with my friends was nerve wracking and I didn’t want to accept it. Needless to say my eyes have opened and I have learned to adapt and will persevere into the “new normal”.

JoJo: During the quarantine I’ve been training with my Dad using gada (Mace) which is one of the first known exercises. It is a stick with a weighted ball at one end. There are many ways to use a gada and it will make me strong and mobile.

8)  What would you say to someone you love to encourage them to try out CFM?

Kate: Believe me when I tell you I never played a sport nor was an athlete, so if I can do this so can you. It is truly for everyone on any fitness level. If you are ready to improve your fitness and unlock your full potential then make your move, give it a chance and walk through that door. You will never know the feeling until you are within the walls and really appreciate the uniqueness of CrossFit Morgantown. It’s full of good vibes and some of the most supportive and awesome people you will ever come to know.  It will be one of the best decisions you will ever make and it will change your life.

JoJo: You will meet a lot of new friendly people that will help you along the way to your new life of fitness.
