Jeff & Alex Horne

This is a special Father’s Day Member Spotlight. For this one, we share the story of the Horne father-son duo.

I cannot imagine a place that is better suited to better myself and teach my son the value of fitness, health and compassion towards and from others. That is what keeps me coming back month after month and day after day.”

How long have you been a member at CFM?

Jeff: My first day was March 13, 2018.

Alex: As of now, I have been a member for 2 and a half years.

Why did you join?

Jeff:  I was in desperate need of a lifestyle change at the time. After 20 years of being sedentary, I was in the worst shape and was fearful for my life. Luckily, Alex had started a few weeks prior to that with one of his friends as something to do during the teachers strike. I had always wanted to try CrossFit and he gave me the push I needed to get started. After my first class, I was hooked…the rest is history.

Alex: I joined because I wanted to improve my physical health and make myself stronger and faster for football.

What do you love most about CFM? / What keeps you coming back each month?

Jeff:  I could literally go on and on about everything I love about CFM, but the thing I love the most, is simply the people. Members and staff alike. No matter the class time you choose to workout, you will find a variety of people working through different levels of fitness, all supporting one another, while being coached by staff members that actually care about your health and well-being, all welcoming you to become part of the CFM family. I cannot imagine a place that is better suited to better myself and teach my son the value of fitness, health and compassion towards and from others. That is what keeps me coming back month after month and day after day.

Alex: I love the attitude of everyone in the gym and the relationships that have been built over my time as a member.

The community of CFM is so incredible. All of the coaches care about you and want to see you do better. The other members are always kind, respectful, and supportive. CFM is such an amazing place to be if you are looking for an environment where you feel safe and loved by all coaches and other members.

4)  What is your current occupation? And/or what are some hobbies, clubs, groups, or activities you participate in?

Jeff: I currently own/operate Blue Land Services with my trusted business partner. We research mineral tile ownership for oil and gas companies across the country, as well as a few other small investment ventures. I have a lot of hobbies that I don’t spend enough time on, and pick up a new one every year it seems. I am currently learning to paint on canvas and just started working on preliminary ideas for a book on advice for boys and young men, from what Alex describes as my “very unique” point of view.

Alex: I am currently enrolled at Morgantown High School and I play football and run track.

5)  Who inspires you?

Jeff:  Historically, and until Alex was born, I have always drawn inspiration from my family. My father being the toughest man I’ve ever known and my mother being the most caring, along with a bother that is likely the hardest working man I know. When Alex was gifted into my life, everything changed. I knew exactly how to be a father, because I have one of the best ever…but I wanted to do it even better. Being his father inspires me to be a better man, better friend and better dad, which will hopefully inspire him to be the best he can be.

Alex: I am inspired by my father who has always been there to support me in any of my dreams or endeavors, no matter what they were, he always preached for me to my best and give it my all.

6)  How has improved fitness impacted your life?

Jeff: In every way imaginable. Going from a sedentary 310 pound man that ate way too much garbage, drank way too much booze, and smoked way too many cigarettes, to a man that finds it hard to take recovery days from workouts has impacted every aspect of my life. I don’t dread walking flights of stairs or long days of physical labor. I don’t have the aches and pains that come with obesity. My energy levels are astronomical, I can be on the go much longer and sleep much less. Mid-day naps are a thing of the past for me. Most importantly, I regained my confidence in myself, knowing that I can adapt and overcome to any situation.

Alex: Becoming more fit has made me a much better football player which has been seen by coaches as well as peers.

7)  What’s one thing – either fitness related or not – you learned in the last month?

Jeff: With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping us at home a lot more than usual, I realized just how much I enjoy watching Alex grow into a young man that I am supremely proud to call my son. I suppose if I learned anything, it’s that I know where my priorities should be for the time being and that I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alex: Having a growth mindset can lead to greater improvement and growth in any area of activity.

8)  What would you say to someone you love to encourage them to try out CFM?

Jeff: That my love for them makes me selfish and I want as much time as possible with them. To that end, the healthier they are the more joy I can receive from having them in my life. I would go on to explain that the CFM family, comprised of the members and coaches therein are supportive, caring and compassionate and that they are led by the most dedicated gym owners I’ve ever had the pleasure to entrust with my health and fitness, and that of my sons.

Alex: The community of CFM is so incredible. All of the coaches care about you and want to see you do better. The other members are always kind, respectful, and supportive. CFM is such an amazing place to be if you are looking for an environment where you feel safe and loved by all coaches and other members.
