“By working out at CFM I have not only slowed down the aging process, I have improved my fitness which enables me to function independently to maintain my home and enjoy and keep up with my adorable grandboys.”
How long have you been a member at Community Fitness of Morgantown?
I’ve been a member at CFM for one and a half years.
Why did you join?
It was Valentine’s day and my wife, Doreen, asked if I would join her for CFM’s Valentine’s Day workout . I wasn’t all that excited but it was Valentine’s Day and how do you say no to that. So glad that I did say yes, the people and environment at CFM were amazing. Everyone was so welcoming and encouraging, I didn’t even realize I was exercising, until the next day, and then I knew I had done something different. We had a great workout together and I was hooked.
What do you love most about Community Fitness of Morgantown? / What keeps you coming back each month?
First, of all, I’ve met so many outstanding people, who are always encouraging me to continue to try to do my best, knowing that I am the oldest person exercising there. Each and every class the coaches are always willing to help me improve my techniques as it applies to each and every lifting skill or drill that we’re working on that day. I find the coaches to be very professional and well skilled in their profession. CFM has introduced “Levels Methods”, where each individual is tested on certain skills and it’s color coded so you know what skills you’re weak at and what skills you’re stronger with. I find this technique to be so very helpful for me personally, as I am then able to get a complete work out in the same time frame as the rest of the class. Because of the coaches and members I’ve met at CFM I look forward to each and every day going to CrossFit Morgantown.
“I am 74 years of age and I feel great. I know my health and fitness levels have greatly improved as a result of training at CFM.”
What is your current occupation? And/or what are some hobbies, clubs, groups, or activities you participate in?
I am retired now after 35 years of teaching elementary/middle school on Long Island in New York State. Also during this time I was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. I served for thirty years in a US Army Hospital and was a First Sergeant for my last 17 years. In the late 1960’s I served 4 years in the United States Air Force as a search and rescue medic and did a tour in Vietnam in 1969.
Some of my hobbies are fly fishing, kayaking , biking and going to Defense in Depth on Monday nights for a friendly pistol shooting competition.
Who inspires you?
My wife, Doreen, who seems to have an endless amount of energy. Six years ago when Doreen started CrossFit in Tennessee, I would go watch her train and compete. I was always impressed by her ability and stamina but I would only just watch. I didn’t feel I could possibly do those kinds of workouts at that time. Doreen is a true friend, my personal trainer and an amazing wife, plus an amazing Nana.
How has improved fitness impacted your life?
I am 74 years of age and I feel great. I know my health and fitness levels have greatly improved as a result of training at CFM. I am able to compete at a better level at the pistol range as I move through the different stages and I have better control of my pistol in terms of accuracy and speed as I move from target to target. This was the one sport I thought I would have to give up as I aged, but I feel I am doing better that ever right now and I credit CFM for this.
What’s one thing – either fitness related or not – you learned in the last month?
This past month I had the realization that life goes on regardless of the pandemic we are dealing with right now. I have come to realize that CFM’s motto of “Friendship, Love, and Loyalty”, is not just rhetoric. Although , due to my age , I have not been attending class at regular scheduled times, CFM has created a safe place and time for Doreen and I to comfortably workout, I have heard from the coaches and numerous fellow members from CrossFit Morgantown, asking how we are and just making sure we are OK.
What would you say to someone you love to encourage them to try out CFM?
The benefits of doing CrossFit by far outweigh not doing CrossFit. As one ages you not only lose strength, you lose mobility, balance, and flexibility. By working out at CFM I have not only slowed down the aging process, I have improved my fitness which enables me to function independently to maintain my home and enjoy and keep up with my adorable grandboys. Although it may seem like an insurmountable task at times, the coaches at CFM will always find a way to modify and create a program that will challenge you personally. I encourage you to leave your ego at the door and give it a try.
